Are you a Social Media or Marketing expert?

I was prompted into this by a recent post from a so called ‘expert’ who clearly didn’t think out his post and what reactions would come before he posted!

Social marketing is the systematic application of marketing along with other concepts and techniques to achieve specific behavioral goals for a social good. Social marketing can be applied to promote, for example, merit goods, make the society avoid demerit goods and thus to promote that considers society’s well being as a whole. This may include asking people not to smoke in public areas, for example, ask them to use seat belts, prompting to make them follow speed limits.

So what makes an expert in these fields an expert?

Why companies should hire 14-year olds!

A lot of companies lose momentum because they fail to see the opportunities social media could give them.  They fail to react to the opportunities they do notice, and most of those who react, are doing it all wrong.

Forget expensive trendwatchers.  Most of them are now discovering Facebook and god forbid if you mention Twitter.  As soon as someone calls himself a trendwatcher, he/she is a late adopter at best.  You’ll pay a lot of money for something most of your competitors already know.

Managers don’t have the time or the skills to do the necessary research.  That’s why they hire employees, but they all have a job to do. Being creative online takes time, and face it, with smaller budgets, fiercer competition,… time spent on something that doesn’t immediately adds value to the company seems like time wasted. TweetDeck, Ordering the Chaos

Many developers have turned to the social network to create contacts and business opportunities, there are of course many to choose from; Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace and my personal favourite Twitter. Many now use Twitter; according to TwitDir an estimated 3,287,083 people use the network and that’s just the people TwitDir follow!

There are many clients and plug-ins available to get you onto Twitter but my own personal favourite is TweetDeck (TD), an Adobe Air application. I’ve been using it for a couple of months, amongst others but I found it to be the most flexible having both single and multi-column formats.

For those of you that haven’t seen it before; you can see some snapshots in both single and multi-column styles below;

Google penalizes Video Bloggers for Keyword Stuffing

After a final rush of development activity at Google HQ where they pulled an all nighter in the Labs a statement was released this evening by Matt.

Google recently announced amongst the inner SEO circle headed up but Matt Cutts that they have developed a way to penalize video bloggers who are ‘Stuffing’ their video blog posts with keywords!

Blackhat SEO techniques are the bane of our lives at Google and it has been brought to our attention that after year’s of work from the Google team our endeavors have to take a new twist. We recently started indexing Video posts and have been very concerned with the results from some authority figures using ‘Keyword stuffing’ and other subliminal techniques to hypnotize their visitors into action’s that they would not normally take like buying that blogger’s latest sensational ebook!

New WordPress plugin add Twitter id to your comments!

A few hours ago (OK 24 ish) this popped up in the RSS;

Direct link to post: How I added the Twitter ID field to comments on Twitip.com

A couple of days ago I added the ability for those leaving comments on my TwiTip Twitter Tips blog to add their Twitter ID as well as their URL to comments. Since doing this I’ve been asked time and time again how we did it. In this guest post Sean Walberg (the guy who actually made it happen and who is my server admin on TwiTip) explains how he did it.

From a post from Darren Rowse on Twitip Continue Reading

Making Sales with ‘Glen Garry Glen Ross’

If you worked in Sales a while you may or may not be familiar with this movie, it’s not an epic but in particular one scene rings true.

I was introduced to the movie in 1990 after a started work for a new software company selling Graphic Development tools. My immediate reaction, OMG who is this new sales manager and WTF does he want from me, my soul?

Take a look first and then we’ll discuss some elements (WARNING:there is some use of profanity in this video clip):

Who to follow on Twitter for Social Media & SEO tips

I recently shifted my interest not totally but more expanding my horizons from Design to SEO and Social Media.

As an avid Twitter user I searched for some interesting people to follow and listen to concerning these subjects, what I found that many people have keywords in their @username but never tweet a single thing about SEO or Social Media so I thought I would make a list of the people I found that are sharing tips either directly from Twitter or via posts that they tweet to Twitter.

In no particular order;

@jdevalk

Owner of Yoast, making WordPress all Google friendly with some nice free plugins, has a tendency to waffle about his train rides and such but some gems in between ;)

@JustinSMV

New to Twitter but shares some nice link’s to Social Media posts.

@garryconn

Full time blogger who shares alot of good stuff, you might get upset with the fact that he tweets links to his blog comments via Twitter but some of them are pretty interesting. Continue Reading
