Only one blog to read in 2009

Whenever I think I’ve had a good idea someone alway’s beats me to it or maybe subconsciously I’d already seen Chris Brogan’s 8 Marketing Bloggers to Watch in 2009 and but my mind said no that’s only similar to your idea get on it now!

Halfway through DM’ing a few people Chris included I looked over to Twitter and saw his tweet about an OPML file and lo and behold there was the post that I was thinking about! lol

Anyway I’m still going to publish it, it’s not exactly the same and here it is ‘If you could only read one blog related to your work who’s would it be?’

SEO is Branding

Guest Poster: Ben McKay, Freelance Search Marketing Consultant, Just Me and My

Ben McKay has been in marketing since 2001, in various online and offline campaign management roles. In the last 3 years he has made a more permanent move into search marketing, working in-house and on a consultancy basis for various marketing and web design agencies

Lately, I’ve been developing ideas around the ideas of how it would be best to ‘teach’someone SEO. It has always occurred to me that because of the intricacies and the continual evolution of search marketing and SEO more specifically, it really must be quite difficult to pin down in regards to methodology or content to teach.

What annoys you on Twitter?

I think there are enough Twitter guides on the net but new people arrive everyday on Twitter and haven’t necessarily read them all, these are just a couple of pet peeves (annoying things) …

If you tweet someone back about something then reference what you’re talking about!

Tweets like ‘I agree’or ‘But thats wrong’will generally go unanswered… I have no idea what your referring to!

Remember in ‘The Rock’when Nicolas Cage says ‘ Well kinda alot’s happened since then’That’s true on Twitter, personally I might make 3 or 4 updates in a 10 minute period and then I get an answer as above I have no idea what your referring too and sometimes this lead’s to misunderstanding’s.

How to get yourself outside the box!

If you ask one of the people on Twitter “Why are you using Twitter?” I think the proper answer would be “to interact and establish relationships with other people” whether its personal or for business, but when someone answer your question by saying “I just follow the people that I know and the people that I’ve met personally before” then you should probably shout at them and say “Go and use Facebook, thats why its there!”.

I use Facebook to contact with my friends overseas and share pictures and stuff, but I’ve never used Facebook to meet new people because I thought its just too creepy for me, or it is a little dangerous to have a lot of information exposed to a total stranger.

It’s that time again! The end of year Best of 2008!

I wanted to take a slightly different angle and ask this question:

Who was the most influential person you met through Twitter in 2008?

I don’t mean who has the most followers or RSS subscribers I don’t mean who has the biggest income etc etc…

Who’s value to you on Twitter, Who’s advice be it personal or business has had the most impact on your life in 2008!?

What Gordon Gekko taught me about Social Media

Gordon Gekko is the legendary corporate raider from the movie “Wall Street” directed by Oliver Stone, I’ve been growing up watching a lot of movies and just couldn’t stop thinking about Gekko after Roger shared an amazing idea on Twitter linking Gekko to Social Media ;).

I started thinking about Gekko and how he managed to be at the top of his game and I came up with points that if we follow correctly we would be very productive when it comes to interacting with each other through Social Media tools and to get the best out of it, I will keep them very short :) :

6 Reasons Why SearchWiki was launched and it’s mistakes

So, SearchWiki came, died, and rose from the dead. But whether you like it, is irrelevant. Why would Google launch this new product with no beta first? We had Google Suggest for a few months and then it was live for all to use and see. But Google SearchWiki becomes live within a few weeks of even hearing about it (Although SearchWiki was in beta for a year it was a very sloppy rollout and partly why there is a large outrage). I have 6 reasons why I think Google did this.

1. IE has about 75% browser market share

Google obviously believes user data (via a browser) is important or they wouldn’t have launched Google Chrome. Google has only 1-3% of browser market share, depending on what stats you read. This is significantly lower than Microsoft and based on what Bill Gates (or Ballmer?) said a while back “We have cutting-edge technology that will jump us 2-3 years ahead of the search-competition, with or without the buyout of Yahoo, although that would help, it’s not necessary” (paraphrase; no citation, cause it’s hard to find the link). So, obviously this browser data is important if Gates (or Ballmer) says this will get them 2-3 years ahead of Google/Yahoo.
