You stole my headline you SOB!

OK, So here is my dilemma you know the user links that are popular with Design blogs?

Well I wanted to implement this kind of thing here using the WordPress ‘Press This’ functionality highlighting links of interest to me in the world of Social Media Marketing.

The guy who sits on my shoulder sometimes (also known as Seth Simonds) basically told me I’m Jacking his SEO, one of the links I posted was to an article he wrote. But Seth also gave some suggestions as to how it would be acceptable and I wanted to see if you agree?

Purely a link with ‘your’ post title is that SEO jacking? I actually just wanted to use it to pass on links via my blog to other articles that I found interesting but I do see Seth’s point.

Seth suggesting the following format which will enable me to:

A. Feel good about it
B. Promote the link to my post.

So here’s the format let me know what you think I don’t want to piss anyone off here ;)

1. Your post title
2. Small excerpt from original article
3. Link to your post
3. My thoughts or input on the story

Is this wrong should I just leave a comment on the original post at the Authors site?Let me know your thoughts!

    Hey there Roger,

I’m not quite sure if I’m understanding this properly. Are you on about posting and linking to someone else’s article, or leaving a comment on someone else’s post and linking to your article?

Either way, I’m not sure you need to go the whole hog with intro paragraph?

Or am I misunderstanding the question? :)

Hey Danny for eg. I started with http://socialmediafish.com/links/how-should-a-business-respond-to-a-social-media-attack-on-its-brand/ that’s when I got the ‘SEO Jacking’ comment (as a joke from Seth) but his point was valid I don’t add anything to it it’s just a link, so should said link have extra commentary from me or should I just leave comments on the original blog post?

  2. Yo,
SEO Jacking? The only thing that I can think of in reference to that term is posting spam links on someone else’s site. In such a case, their SEO strategy (amongst other things) will be driving users to their site and you “jack” it, by posting comments/links that are entirely unrelated, all in the name of driving traffic to your site.
Furthermore, if you are linking to an article that he wrote, in most cases he’s going to benefit from YOUR SEO, which also boosts his SEO.
I do like your format for linking and doling out credit where its do, I have something similar in the works in my little web world.
As far as posting someone’s link with “their” title, wtf else are you supposed to call it? So if I want to promote this post, I now have to come up with another title? I don’t have time, moreover, it’s YOUR link, and assuming YOU know what YOU’RE doing, the title will be semantically tasty, direct and spot-on. If I change that, it could very well negatively impact your SEO.
Lastly, Seth should take some of his own advice on this one. Ironically, his latest post is titled “Stop Trying To Be Creative”. Alrighty then, I shall and I’m using your title.

Hey J Thanks for the comment just to clarify Seth and I are on good speaking terms so Sorry to Seth if I made him out to be the bad guy, actually I asked his opinion after the first link post.

Maybe I’m thinking about this too much, on the design blog side I wouldn’t think twice about doing this and actually do over at http://styl.eti.me

    Roger,
I didn’t think you did, nor do I think Seth is a bad guy. I don’t know how much you are thinking about this, but it seems like it has taken along the right path.
Meh. Messaging is so harsh out of context.
    Cheers,

For my humble little blog, if I am ONLY linking to an outside post, I tend to include a short snippet to that article/story. For one, it gives my readers a quick look at what it’s about, and, secondly, it entices them to actually click on the link.

If I am including a link in the context of a larger post of my own, I typically do not include any other info unless a quote is necessary to the point I happen to be making.

Those are my two cents! (and thanks for your enjoyable tweets!)
