What annoys you on Twitter?
by Roger
I think there are enough Twitter guides on the net but new people arrive everyday on Twitter and haven’t necessarily read them all, these are just a couple of pet peeves (annoying things) …
If you tweet someone back about something then reference what you’re talking about!
Tweets like ‘I agree’ or ‘But thats wrong’ will generally go unanswered… I have no idea what your referring to!
Remember in ‘The Rock’ when Nicolas Cage says ‘ Well kinda alot’s happened since then’ That’s true on Twitter, personally I might make 3 or 4 updates in a 10 minute period and then I get an answer as above I have no idea what your referring too and sometimes this lead’s to misunderstanding’s.
If you send someone a personal DM, Bravo! Good on you but make sure your following the person back so they can personally answer your personal DM!
Grant Griffiths recently posted Automating Some of My Twitter Activity I agree there’s nothing wrong with automating certain aspects I still don’t agree with the auto DM’s but that’s your own business but automating blog posts, no problem, just don’t make anything automated that you wouldn’t appreciate someone doing to you!
IMHO e.g Don’t autofeed anything with more than 3 updates per hour.
Do Retweet favorites at different times of the day
Not in a spammy way and maybe limit it to maximum 3 times in a day but if you’ve got a Red hot post and want everyone to know it then catch the different timezones, I am amazed when I retweet something two day’s after and the amount of people that reply ‘Thanks for that’ as they missed it the first time!
Every Twitter client has a way to Favorite use it to save Tweets that you would like to retweet later!
Give credit where credit is due.
We all know that people can get followers for breaking news or sharing insightful information, in my opinion it’s just plain rude to so obviously retweet something and not use the @ name from the originator see poll.
If you want to track your own tweet link metrics then use your own link for it so you can track it but you can still give @ credit.
I asked Twitter: Just making a pet peeves (things that annoy you) twitter post any suggestions?
@KursaalTom People who tweet just one word
@esperanca Cars that consume two parking spots; a dripping faucet that just won’t quit; atrocious spellers who ‘correct’ spelling…
@scotchegg Well I do find your picture a little annoying!(Look at me been funny!), but maybe i am just been a really grumpy git today. :(
Way to win friends and influence people ;)
Anything annoy you? Apart from more ‘How to use Twitter’ post’s Or people like me moaning about How to use Twitter ;)Sorry I’m all about transparency I say what I think even if it’s not the ‘correct’ thing to do…

There were a couple of “life in general” peeves above, so I won’t go there. However, with regard to Twitter:
Some of these 3rd party apps like Tweetwaster and everyone broadcasting their score.
Open conversations of specific matter when the rest of us don’t know what’s going on. Please use DM or Skype.
Twit Spamming….
When people start using Twitter, they’re usually connected with people they already know. But when people they don’t know start coming into play (because of genuine interest) and they just keep tweeting about what they ate or how they tie their shoelaces… it’s annoying.
I’m not like @yowjang… it doesn’t all have to be value, but give people you don’t know who follow you what they want. At least some usefull information.

Man, I only have a few people to follow, I can’t stand the peron who twitts a hundred times in a minute… That kills me!
In tweetdeck I would like an option to say right click on your tweet, and then filter just by you. I tend to read your tweets, but not everyone’s. You tend to have more relevant content for me.
Now I have to manually type in your name to filter and everyone elses and that SUX.

Pet peeve: the way you put ‘correct’ in quotations to make it look like an especially intricate and awesome little joke, but spelt it correctly. That’s just annoying. Don’t make me think something is a joke when it isn’t kthxbai
It annoys me when people ask for followers so that they can make a “quota” so -to-speak. i.e. @annoyingperson Only need 3 more followers till 500, pls follow me
@Kathryn Austin, really I think it’s a bit of fun and helps connect more people OK they might just follow for the sake of it and then it’s as useless as following all your follower’s back bots, spammers and all.
I tweeted about 2000 today because it’s a nice number doesn’t mean anything, I also tweeted that someone needed one more for 500 and was offering a prize, hell why not share the love if it was one of your designs that was being showcased you’d be happy for a retweet so why not when it’s a person? ;)
@Roger, Yes, I see your perspective, and you’re right. I suppose it can be fun and helpful, and when special offers are made for following, then that’s great, too. Who doesn’t like a special offer :) To clarify, my point in my previous comment was directed to the people who ask for followers just to have “the most” followers, (and sometimes those ppl don’t follow back).
“If you tweet someone back about something then reference what you’re talking about!”
Eh, I don’t really agree with this one. Sometimes there just isn’t room to give much context, and the Twitter.com interface lets you see which specific reply the @reply is about. Just click on the gray “in reply to ” link and you’ve got your context.

@Kathryn Austin, Ah OK no-one should be just in it for the numbers but it’s not to say you can’t be happy about a target ;)
btw there are no rules it’s all about doing your own thing these are just opinions!
@snipe, was more meaning if the reply is later, alot happens in between so its tough to know what they are answering if it’s an immediate reply it’s easy but alot of people reply to something an hour later after you’ve updated another 10 times so it’s hard to tell which tweet they are referring to?
If that happens for me I just put something like @soandso re:bananas blah blah blah
@Roger, no no, I totally get what you meant. But when you look at the reply (the one you’re confused about) in Twitter.Com, the text underneath the reply is clickable and takes you right to the previous comment related to the tweet. (I know I’m not explaining myself very well here….)
For example, you just @replied me on Twitter. If I was afk and didn’t see your reply for hours and hours, I’d be able to pull up what tweet you hit “reply” to in order to tweet back. Of course this is only helpful when people use the reply function properly, but I rarely (as in once a month, perhaps) find myself unable to figure out what someone was referring to in a delayed reply.

Of course, JUST to make me look bad, it seems like the IDs of the individual tweets are not accurate right now.
For example, my tweet:
@styletime and I replied back :) half a minute ago from TwitterFox in reply to styletime
The “in reply to styletime” link *should* take me to the tweet you posted, telling me you had replied…
http://twitter.com/styletime/status/1063008809
Instead, right now, its taking me to the wrong tweet by you. Must be a temporarily glitch tho – its always worked before.
@Jim Gaudet, Thanks Jim! ;)

I find it rather rude when responding to an open tweet (one not directed to anyone) and the person doesn’t acknowledge your response. Is it an oversight or on purpose? Most likely, I won’t try to communicate with that person again. And that is a loss for the both of us and anyone else we follow or follows us.
The font on this page combined with the layout on this site makes it really really hard to read. I didnt even read the article or I will get a headache. I am using stock Vista fonts with Chrome. Hope its fixed the next time I come.

@Mark Stahler, Sorry about that Mark, that’s the first complaint I’ve received about the layout or type choice only compliments before, will take your comments into consideration. Thanks
My biggest are continual “begging” for followers & or retweets. Also, I’m all for retweeting your favorites occasionally but several times right in a row is a bit much. I also seem to get quite a bit of “hey what’s up” DMs. I think your amount of RT are just right – I’m always interested to see what you’ve dug up next.

I only follow a few people but I hate it when someone twitts more than 5 time an hour. That feels like spam to me and is often a reason to un-follow someone.
Another thing that annoys me is people twittering about when they’re having coffee or whishing everyone a good morning every single day. I don’t care about that stuff. A personal tweet once and a while is OK but don’t exagerate.
@Barbara, what if they have, say, a thousand followers and interact with all or most of them? That can easily build up to a lot more than 5 tweets an hour.
Somehow it just seems kind of unfair to be unfollowing people because they’re chatty. Not their fault it fills up your whole stream because you’re not following so many people, they probably see their tweets as one in every 40 that come in, even though they tweet 30 times an hour.
@Barbara and @Swizec I experienced the same concerns as Barbara when I first started using Twitter, but as I learned how to use Twitter effectively and as I gained more followers, my opinion changed and I definitely have to agree with @Swizec. I actually like to hear what people are doing, or who they are saying hi to, or when they are drinking their coffee/tea/redbull/ etc. because it brings Twitter down to a more personal level, which is what really helps me connect with the people I follow and people who follow me. But I also like to get valuable information about the design industry, current events, recipes, social media, etc. from those people, too. I follow a lot of people who are graphic designers, but I also follow a lot of people in other industries, so I try to focus a little on everyone. But some days, I have more personal tweets and other days I have more professional tweets. It’s really quite a balancing act. But’s it’s all positive. :)
