Social media or the power of numbers

Does this sound familiar?

Christmas dinner.

A time where friends and family gather ’round a Christmas tree and stuff themselves with lots of food.  For some of them it has been a year since last time they’ve seen each other so there’s a lot of talking going on.

At one time or another the question pops up: “What are you doing right now?”.  I explain (again) where I work and what I do (basically sell theater tickets and try not to screw up) and if they’re smart, they shut up and don’t ask any further.  But there’s always one smart ass uncle around the table, he’s the one that always has some controversial opinion about something political just for the hell of it.

So I tell about social media and get a lot of confusing faces, it’s like teaching algebra to toddlers… it just doesn’t work.

Treat your online consumer differently

Okay, so you know what you want to do with social media.  But can you treat your online consumers the same way like you treat your offline consumers?  Do the same rules apply?  How do you make the transition from broadcasting to the ‘engaged’online community?

In a way the same rules apply, but they’re slightly different between online consumers and offline consumers.  The biggest difference is the amount and the quality of information  they get exposed to and how they use that information in their decision making process.

·  Short attention span.  Depending on who did the research you’ve got from 1 nanosecond to 2 seconds to catch someone’s attention.  Online, it moves even faster. ·  They filter more information.  Because of the information overload they develop the necessary skills to filter more efficiently and more quickly through it all.  This means you have to strip down your information to its essence.

How to get yourself outside the box!

If you ask one of the people on Twitter “Why are you using Twitter?” I think the proper answer would be “to interact and establish relationships with other people” whether its personal or for business, but when someone answer your question by saying “I just follow the people that I know and the people that I’ve met personally before” then you should probably shout at them and say “Go and use Facebook, thats why its there!”.

I use Facebook to contact with my friends overseas and share pictures and stuff, but I’ve never used Facebook to meet new people because I thought its just too creepy for me, or it is a little dangerous to have a lot of information exposed to a total stranger.

Are you a Social Media or Marketing expert?

I was prompted into this by a recent post from a so called ‘expert’who clearly didn’t think out his post and what reactions would come before he posted!

Social marketing is the systematic application of marketing along with other concepts and techniques to achieve specific behavioral goals for a social good. Social marketing can be applied to promote, for example, merit goods, make the society avoid demerit goods and thus to promote that considers society’s well being as a whole. This may include asking people not to smoke in public areas, for example, ask them to use seat belts, prompting to make them follow speed limits.

So what makes an expert in these fields an expert?

Why companies should hire 14-year olds!

A lot of companies lose momentum because they fail to see the opportunities social media could give them.  They fail to react to the opportunities they do notice, and most of those who react, are doing it all wrong.

Forget expensive trendwatchers.  Most of them are now discovering Facebook and god forbid if you mention Twitter.  As soon as someone calls himself a trendwatcher, he/she is a late adopter at best.  You’ll pay a lot of money for something most of your competitors already know.

Managers don’t have the time or the skills to do the necessary research.  That’s why they hire employees, but they all have a job to do. Being creative online takes time, and face it, with smaller budgets, fiercer competition,… time spent on something that doesn’t immediately adds value to the company seems like time wasted. Making Sales with ‘Glen Garry Glen Ross’

If you worked in Sales a while you may or may not be familiar with this movie, it’s not an epic but in particular one scene rings true.

I was introduced to the movie in 1990 after a started work for a new software company selling Graphic Development tools. My immediate reaction, OMG who is this new sales manager and WTF does he want from me, my soul?

Take a look first and then we’ll discuss some elements (WARNING:there is some use of profanity in this video clip):

Who to follow on Twitter for Social Media & SEO tips

I recently shifted my interest not totally but more expanding my horizons from Design to SEO and Social Media.

As an avid Twitter user I searched for some interesting people to follow and listen to concerning these subjects, what I found that many people have keywords in their @username but never tweet a single thing about SEO or Social Media so I thought I would make a list of the people I found that are sharing tips either directly from Twitter or via posts that they tweet to Twitter.

In no particular order;

@jdevalk

Owner of Yoast, making WordPress all Google friendly with some nice free plugins, has a tendency to waffle about his train rides and such but some gems in between ;)

@JustinSMV

New to Twitter but shares some nice link’s to Social Media posts.

@garryconn

Full time blogger who shares alot of good stuff, you might get upset with the fact that he tweets links to his blog comments via Twitter but some of them are pretty interesting. Continue Reading

What are your goals with Social Media?

Before you dive into social media it’s a good idea to identify your goals. Do you want to create a conversation with other designers? Reach new clients for your work? Find out what’s going on out there and get constant input through a myriad of RSS feeds?

All of this is possible, and you will get out of it what you put into it. Keeping on top of your social media presence can be a lot of work, but if you pick your tools appropriately, you can make it work for you.

Twitter, DIGG, Stumbleupon do you have enough time?

Mike Smith recently hit a nail on the head!

Social media is fun. Social media is a great way to connect with other like minded people. Social media is a great way to interact with potential clients and customers for your business. But what are you supposed to do when social media becomes too time consuming and wraps up the vast majority of your time and you’ve been sucked into the black hole and cannot seem to get out long enough to keep your business floating?
