What Gordon Gekko taught me about Social Media

Gordon Gekko is the legendary corporate raider from the movie “Wall Street” directed by Oliver Stone, I’ve been growing up watching a lot of movies and just couldn’t stop thinking about Gekko after Roger shared an amazing idea on Twitter linking Gekko to Social Media ;).

I started thinking about Gekko and how he managed to be at the top of his game and I came up with points that if we follow correctly we would be very productive when it comes to interacting with each other through Social Media tools and to get the best out of it, I will keep them very short :) :

wallstreet What Gordon Gekko taught me about Social Media

  1. NETWORKING Gekko created a network of reliable sources that gave him information about his industry, and that’s what we do when we are on Twitter or Friendfeed, we follow the sources that feature our interests, it depends on who you are and what your job is, your character is what defines your usage of Social Media tools.

  2. RELATIONSHIPS Gekko developed relationships with people that bridge the gab between him and other organizations, and that what bloggers like Robert Scoble do, when you have contacts inside a company,  you have the opportunity to get important news before others, getting to know people brings you a lot of opportunities, you get new clients, new mentors of your industry.

  3. YOU EITHER DO IT RIGHT OR YOU GET ELIMINATED lets face it, you are not going to get any friends/clients through Social Media tools by spamming the followers or doing too much self-promotion, its okay to promote for yourself or your company through Social Media tools but overdoing it will drive people away from you , nobody likes a spammer :).

  4. GREED FOR KNOWLEDGE Gekko had the greed for money, everyone of us is greedy for something, I’m greedy when it comes to my interests such as Typography and Politics, we always want more and more, GREED IS GOOD.

  5. SHARE THE KNOWLEDGE Gekko didn’t keep his knowledge to himself, he taught Bud Fox “Charlie Sheen” everything he knew about his work, through Social Media tools you get to know people that have answers for your questions, by interacting with them you get more knowledge.

6.PARTICIPATE The world of Social Media is exactly like the stock market, nobody stays at the top for a really long time, but in order to stay for the longest period you have to work hard, getting involved in Social Media by creating original mind-blowing content and putting yourself out there gets you where you want, don’t expect anything if you are not sharing information or interacting with people.

Greed is good?….
